Lesson 81
Ta Form + toki

There are several ways to translate time into Japanese, but toki is used when talking about the time that certain events occurred. After the Ta Form, it is equivalent to "when" in "When you came over last week...." Here are some examples:

  • Watashi wa sore o yonda toki, totemo odorokimashita. (When I read that, I was very surprised.)
  • Sore o kiita toki waratta. (I laughed when I heard that.)
  • John wa koketa toki zubon ga yabureta. (John's pants tore when he fell.)
